What is a sitemap ?
A site map is a visual or textually organized model of a Web site’s content that allows the users to navigate through the site to find the information they are looking for, just as a traditional geographical map helps people find places they are looking for in the real world.
Why do we need a sitemap ?
This is what Google says about sitemap
A sitemap is a file where you can list the web pages of your site to tell Google and other search engines about the organization of your site content. Search engine web crawlers like Googlebot read this file to more intelligently crawl your site.
We can make a sitemap for wordpress by using the plugin
Google XML Sitemap
After install and active the plugin, we need to go Settings -> XML-sitemap to configure the sitemap. Sitemap is generated for us automatically, we need to check again to make sure our sitemap works correctly.
If the first link appears like this one, it means the plugins is ready to go.
In case you have a 404 error, you must to to the directories via FTP and create new file sitemap.xml
After that, set your sitemap.xml with permission 777. Reload the page again, the magic will happen.
Submit sitemap to Google webmaster
As Google said
The Webmaster Tools Sitemaps page lets you make sure that Google is properly getting all the information provided in your sitemaps. The Sitemaps page displays a summary of the data Google gathered from your sitemaps, and also allows you to individually test how Google retrieves your sitemaps as you make changes to them.
To submit the sitemap, simply follow the instructor of Google: how to submit sitemap .
